Mick Schumann heads the family enterprise that is Great Lakes Surf School, working alongside wife Sharyn, sons Beau and Sam and daughter Ashley.

A level two-accredited surf coach, Mick is a firm believer in providing a holistic ocean education to all the school’s learn-to-surfers.

"By lesson’s end, I want to be sure they’ve not only stood on a board for the first time, but they know how to read the wind, waves and rips and are able to manage themselves safely in the water."

"I usually share a few stories about surfing etiquette too, so they know what to expect when a bunch of surfers are sharing the same break."

With a decade’s service as captain at Cape Hawk Surf Lifesaving Association club, Mick has a personal stake in the safety of visitors to Forster’s One Mile Beach.

Eldest son Beau and daughter Ashley run lessons regularly at the school, as does youngest son Sam whose exploits in 2008-2009 junior surf competitions suggest he may find himself a fixture on the pro tour in coming years.

With this much expertise to call on, the school is also able to maintain a ratio of one instructor for every three students, ensuring high-quality coaching and personal attention in every class.
