Blake Thornton was born and raised in Little Bay, near the surfing heartland of Maroubra Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, but learned to surf at age four on the NSW South Coast. A star athlete, Blake devoted his junior years to a potential career as a professional rugby league player, before a calamitous boating accident ended his footballing dreams and very nearly his life.

Rugby league’s loss was surfing’s gain however, and Blake’s re-invention as a competitive surfer led to a NSW Open and then Australian Open Surfmasters title in 2004. Blake now has the Association of Surfing Professionals pro tour in his sights and, in 2009, finished third in the prestigious World Qualifying Series O’Neill Cold Water Classic event in Scotland.

Blake’s surf school partner Paul Moffatt (“Moff”) started out on the Maroubra waves in 1980 aged 10, and “The Bra” is still his home break today. Leading a crew of highly-experienced and motivated coaches as high-performance coach for Surfing NSW Elite Coaching, Moff has more than 15 years’ top-level coaching experience and, as a senior lifeguard at Maroubra, has a personal stake in the safety of every surf student and beach-goer on his local patch.
